Building Successful Cases Through Report Writing
Officers will be instructed on various types of reports and key elements needed for each. Style, grammar, and punctuation skills are reviewed. Modern and various methods of accurately reconstructing events, organizing thoughts and observations at a scene to generate a timeline are taught. Officers are taught that a well-written report needs to be:
- Efficient, including only necessary words and facts
- Professional, free of grammar and spelling mistakes
- Objective, omitting opinions, explanations, and theories
- Thorough, including all pertinent information
- Organized, presented in a logical sequence
In addition to report writing, a segment of the class will cover witness and suspect interview skills and techniques and how to decipher differing accounts and record statements. The class will stress the necessity of documentation of custody of evidence, how injuries were handled, and investigations carried out. Lastly, courtroom testimony skills will be reviewed emphasizing challenges that can be made to the officer’s report.
